Recently returned to the city of Rome, Palazzo Merulana is a modern and dynamic space just waiting to be discovered and experienced in the heart of the Esquilino quarter.
Located in the former Ufficio d'Igiene, today the building houses an important collection of modern and contemporary art.
A BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND A TOUR OF THE BUILDING Palazzo Merulana is a treasure trove of beautiful contemporary art, but also a space where you can relax and spend time away from the chaos of the city. So don’t wait; come and pay us a visit now! Banner photo by Roma Fotografia
In the 1960s, the decision was made to demolish the original Ufficio d'Igiene, dating back to 1929, and rebuild it in reinforced concrete and glass, but the project was never completed, and the gutted body of the building marked this stretch of street for decades. In 2018, thanks to a major renovation project, this "urban void" was filled with the opening of the new Palazzo Merulana.
Since 2014, the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation has housed in the building a collection of modern and contemporary art, which, because of its organic nature and breadth, is a real tool for increasing knowledge of 20th-century Italian art. In Palazzo Merulana, in an area covering 1800 square metres, more than 90 works have found their permanent home.
Here, the spatial layout is geared specifically to the exhibition of works of art and the production of cultural events, shows, book presentations and meetings with leading figures of the contemporary world.
The visit begins on the ground floor with works by Antonietta Raphael and Ceroli, Fontana and Penone.
On the second floor are works by De Chirico, Balla, Capogrossi, Severini and Cambellotti, to name but a few. On the third floor is a gallery for temporary exhibitions.
Before leaving, don't forget to go up to the attic, which is dedicated to cultural activities and food and wine events, and to the splendid terrace, from where you can enjoy a unique view over the roofs and domes of Rome.
